Chopped vocals are one of the most recognisable features of modern Brazilian funk. A phrase gets cut into fragments, re-triggered on a grid, pitched, stuttered and looped until it functions less like singing and more like a drum pattern that happens to contain words.
It sounds effortless in finished tracks and is fiddly in practice. What follows is the working logic behind it, from slicing through arrangement, and then the part that is usually left out of tutorials: whose vocal you are allowed to use.
Why funk chops vocals at all
Two reasons, one musical and one cultural.
Musically, funk is rhythm-dominant and low-end-dominant. There is limited room for sustained melodic content, but plenty of room for short percussive events in the midrange. A chopped vocal fits that space perfectly: it adds a human, intelligible layer without competing with the sub-bass.

Slicing: where to cut
The cut point determines everything. Some practical principles:
- Cut on consonants where possible. A slice that begins on a hard consonant has a natural transient and will sit on the grid convincingly. A slice starting mid-vowel sounds smeared unless that is the intent.
- Keep slices short at first. Syllable-length fragments give you more rhythmic options than word-length ones.
- Preserve one long slice. Even in a heavily chopped arrangement, one longer phrase gives the listener something to hold on to.
- Trim the tails deliberately. A slice's release is as audible as its attack; abrupt truncation is a texture, and sometimes the right one.
- Label your slices. Ten unnamed fragments become unusable within an hour.
Repetition and the hook
Funk hooks are frequently built by repetition rather than by melody. Take a two-syllable fragment, place it four times per bar, drop one instance, and you have a rhythmic figure. Change which instance is missing and you have a variation. Change the pitch of one instance and you have a third.
This is the same principle as drum programming, and it responds to the same discipline: the most memorable pattern is usually the one with fewer events and stronger placement. Density is not intensity.
Pitch manipulation
Pitching chops does more than change the note. It changes the perceived character of the voice and, at extremes, changes its function:
- Small shifts (a few semitones) create melodic movement while keeping the voice recognisably human.
- Large upward shifts turn a vocal into a bright, almost synthetic accent — effectively a percussion sound with vowel colour.
- Large downward shifts produce weight and menace, but collide with the sub-bass. Filter the low end out of pitched-down chops or they will fight the kick.
- Formant-preserving versus raw transposition are stylistic choices, not correctness choices. Raw transposition (the classic sampler behaviour) is often more characteristic of the genre.
Timing: grid, groove and the human element
Hard-quantised chops read as mechanical, which is sometimes exactly right. But most grooves benefit from small deliberate offsets — a chop landing a few milliseconds behind the percussion leans back, one landing ahead pushes. Because the ear is highly sensitive to speech timing, these micro-adjustments are more audible on vocals than on drums.

Call and response
Funk vocal arrangements often work as dialogue: a lead phrase answered by a chopped echo, a crowd-style response, or a pitched fragment of the same phrase. This structure comes from the baile, where MCs work with a crowd rather than performing at it. It also solves an arrangement problem — response layers occupy rhythmic space without requiring new melodic material.
Practical patterns to try
- 01Lead phrase in bar one, chopped fragment of its last word answering across bar two.
- 02Same chop pitched up an octave used only on the final beat of each four-bar phrase.
- 03A single stuttered syllable filling the gap before every kick cluster.
- 04The lead phrase reversed and used as a transition into the drop.
Transitions and texture
Chopped vocals are efficient transition tools. A rapid stutter accelerating into a section change, a reversed tail leading into a subtraction moment, or a filtered vocal wash covering a drum edit all achieve movement without adding a new instrument. Stacking multiple detuned copies of one fragment can produce a pad-like texture that still sounds native to the genre.
Mixing chopped vocals
- High-pass aggressively. Chops rarely need anything below roughly 150–200 Hz, and removing it protects the low end.
- Use short reverbs and slap delays; long tails blur the rhythm you just built.
- Compress for consistency, then automate level per slice — different syllables carry different energy.
- Check on a phone speaker. If the chop disappears, it is competing with percussion in the same band.
Sampling, copyright and clearance
This section is not legal advice, and rules differ by country. But the general principle is unambiguous and worth stating plainly: you cannot freely use someone else's copyrighted vocal recording in a commercial release.
In most jurisdictions a recorded song involves at least two distinct sets of rights: the sound recording (the master) and the underlying musical work (the composition, including lyrics). Using a fragment of a commercial record can implicate both. Clearing a sample typically means obtaining permission from the master owner and from the publisher, and often agreeing terms before release.
Short duration does not create an exemption you can rely on, and neither does obscurity, transformation, or crediting the source. Doctrines that limit copyright exist in various legal systems, but they are fact-specific defences rather than a licence, and they vary enormously between countries.
Lower-risk approaches producers actually use
- 01Record your own vocals, or collaborate with a vocalist and document the agreement in writing.
- 02Use sample libraries whose licence explicitly permits commercial release, and keep the licence on file.
- 03Commission vocal sessions specifically for chopping, so you control both recording and composition.
- 04If you genuinely need a known recording, pursue clearance before you build the track around it.
- 05Keep a session log of every source. Rights questions frequently arrive years later.
In summary
Chopping vocals is a rhythmic discipline first, a melodic one second, and a rights process alongside both. The producers who do it best treat a voice as material with real physical properties — transients, formants, breath, timing — rather than as an audio file to be sliced on a grid and hoped for.
