In most genres the bass supports the track. In Brazilian funk it frequently is the track. The low end carries the rhythm, the harmony and much of the emotional weight, and it is engineered for playback systems that other genres would consider extreme: enormous sound systems, car installations, and phone speakers that cannot reproduce it at all.
There is no single correct low-end formula. What follows is a set of relationships and trade-offs that recur across the genre, not a recipe.
The kick is usually the bass
The single most important structural fact: in a great deal of funk, the kick drum is tuned and sustained enough to function as the bassline. It is not a transient plus a separate sub — it is one voice doing both jobs.
Consequences you have to design around:
- Tuning is compositional. The kick's pitch sets the track's harmonic centre. If it disagrees with the vocal or melodic content, the mix will sound broken no matter how you EQ it.
- Kick length interacts with rhythm. Long kicks placed close together overlap. Whether that overlap is muddy or powerful depends on how you shape the decay.
- A second sub layer is optional and often unnecessary. Adding one without a plan is the fastest way to lose definition.

Two workable architectures
1. One low voice
A single tuned kick carries everything below roughly 200 Hz. Nothing else is allowed into that region. This is the simplest and cleanest approach, it survives loud playback well, and it is extremely common. The kick is shaped by adjusting its pitch envelope, decay and saturation rather than by layering.
2. Kick plus disciplined sub
A shorter, punchier kick provides the transient, and a separate sub-bass plays sustained notes — but only in the spaces between kicks, or ducked hard underneath them via sidechain. This gives more harmonic movement at the cost of requiring real discipline. If both voices sound at once at full level, you get a smear rather than a groove.
Sub-bass: how low, and how much
Very low content (below roughly 40 Hz) is felt on large systems and inaudible on small ones. It also eats headroom. A few practical positions:
- High-pass the whole mix somewhere below the fundamental you actually want, to remove inaudible rumble that steals loudness.
- Decide consciously whether the fundamental sits around 40–50 Hz (club and car weight) or around 60–80 Hz (better small-speaker translation), because you generally cannot optimise both.
- Keep sub content mono. Stereo information at the bottom translates unpredictably and can cause problems on physical systems.
Distortion, saturation and clipping as aesthetic
Distortion in funk is frequently intentional. Saturated, clipped and overdriven low end is a stylistic hallmark of several contemporary strains, particularly the São Paulo-associated club styles and car-audio-oriented production. Treating it as an error to be cleaned up misreads the genre.
It is also functionally useful. Distortion generates harmonics above the fundamental, and those harmonics are what let a listener perceive a bass note on a device that physically cannot reproduce it. A pure sine sub disappears on a phone; a saturated one is still audible because its upper harmonics survive.
Ways to add weight without losing control
- 01Parallel saturation. Duplicate the low voice, distort the copy heavily, high-pass that copy, and blend it under the clean fundamental. You keep the clean bottom and gain audible harmonics.
- 02Clipping the transient. A soft clipper on the kick's attack raises perceived loudness without lengthening the note.
- 03Multiband approach. Saturate only above the fundamental so the bottom octave stays defined.
- 04Tape or tube-style saturation for warmth versus hard clipping for aggression — different characters, both valid.
The limit is legibility. Distortion should make the note easier to hear on small speakers, not turn the pattern into continuous noise. If you cannot tell where each kick starts, you have gone too far.
Frequency management across the mix
Because the low end is so loud, everything else must get out of its way. A rough working map:
- Below ~200 Hz — kick and bass only, nothing else.
- 200–500 Hz — the muddiest region; be sparing. Percussion body and vocal warmth compete here.
- 500 Hz–3 kHz — vocals and percussion identity. This is what carries the track on phones.
- 3–10 kHz — chop brightness, shakers, transient definition.
- Above 10 kHz — air and texture; also where excessive limiting shows up as harshness.
High-pass almost everything that is not the bass voice. Vocals, chopped fragments, percussion layers and effects rarely need content under 150–200 Hz, and removing it recovers headroom you can spend on the low end instead.
Translation: phones, headphones, cars, clubs
Funk has an unusually wide playback range, and each context punishes different mistakes.
- Phone speakers reproduce almost nothing below ~300 Hz. Your bass must be inferable from harmonics, and the vocal and percussion must carry the groove alone.
- Earbuds and headphones expose stereo problems, reverb tails and any low-frequency phase issues.
- Car systems often exaggerate a narrow low band dramatically. A resonant peak that looks minor on monitors can dominate in a car.
- Large sound systems reveal excessive sub energy and sloppy kick decay, and they are unforgiving of over-limiting.
Practical routine: check the mix on a phone speaker, on earbuds, in a car if you have access to one, and at low volume on monitors. If the groove survives all four, the mix is doing its job. Reference against released tracks in the same style rather than against your memory of them.
Avoiding a muddy mix
- 01Tune the kick before anything else.
- 02Decide on one low-end architecture and remove whatever does not belong to it.
- 03Shorten decays before reaching for EQ cuts — many mud problems are timing problems.
- 04Mix at low volume; loudness disguises low-end congestion.
- 05Check mono. If the bass changes level in mono, you have phase issues.
- 06Leave headroom before the limiter. Crushed masters lose exactly the punch the genre depends on.
Arrangement decisions that protect the low end
The most effective low-end tool is silence. Removing the bass for a bar makes its return feel enormous, and it costs nothing. Similarly, keeping melodic content in the upper midrange, restricting pads, and letting percussion carry the transitions all leave space for the bottom octaves to do their work.
None of this is a mandatory formula. Funk producers routinely break every guideline above deliberately, and some of the genre's most distinctive records are built from exactly the kind of overloaded, saturated low end that a conventional mixing manual would reject. The point is to break the rules knowingly.
